Union Street

This picture was taken in 1974 by the noted campaigner for preservation of St Helier's architectural history, Andre Ferrari. He comments:'This entire row was demolished for the Hue Court development soon after. In subsequent years the entire rest of the street up to Bird's Bakery on the corner of New Street was demolished in piecemeal redevelopment. Only the house on the left remains. Shops that vanished included Seward (books I think), and Le Mart which was an Aladdin's cave of household goods. The next corner was Wellington Furnishers, and just a door or two up a builder's yard in the former St Jude's church. All now gone. And who knows what lanes and yards existed behind the street frontages? '
Businesses
The Prince of Wales Hotel was on the corner with New Street in 1873, run by John Sinel. His clientele might have had trouble finding him because his establishment was at 36 New Street, making the corner with 1 Union Street, not the other was round, as shown in this advert
