Pier Road was once a very important road, because it was the only link between the centre of St Helier and Havre des Pas. This explains the strange name, because the road is well inland from the piers of St Helier Harbour. The pier referred to was probably an early jetty at Havre des Pas, which was the closest mooring to the town centre. The road was formerly known as Le Chemin du Chaussée.

Ford's Royal Hotel was at 24 Pier Road in 1840
This Royal Hotel was not connected with the business of the same name which still operates in David Place today, nor with the Royal Yacht Hotel, which is also still in business at the Weighbridge, close to Pier Road
