Public art in Jersey

La Repasseuse in the Town Hall's collection

Although Jersey does not have a dedicated public art gallery, and seems no closer to getting one despite pressure on the States over the years, it does have a substantial public art collection, housed in a number of locations, some fully accessible to the public, others only by appointment or on special occasions

Your Paintings

The extent of this collection was revealed by Your Paintings, a joint initiative between the BBC and the Public Catalogue Foundation (a registered charity) and participating collections and museums from across the UK. Your Paintings, which launched in 2011, aimed to show the entire UK national collection of oil paintings, the stories behind the paintings, and where to see them for real. [1]

Oil paintings

The initial collection, which was rebranded under Art UK, is made up of paintings from thousands of museums and other public institutions around the country, including 738 paintings housed in 28 locations in Jersey. Only oil paintings were initially included in the project, so the much larger quantity of watercolours housed in public collections does not feature. This, unfortunately, excludes the works of watercolourist and lithographer Jean Le Capelain, one of Jersey's most accomplished 19th century artists.

This section of Jerripedia includes a large number of the works featured in Your Paintings as well as some not covered by the project. This page includes a representative gallery of works to be found in a variety of locations, as well as links to the individual collections. The locations were correct in 2012, but some paintings may have been moved since then.

The majority of the works included are in the Jersey Heritage Trust collection, which has brought together works previously owned by the States of Jersey and La Société Jersiaise. The majority are by Jersey artists and feature Jersey subjects, but there are Jersey portraits and landscapes by non-islanders and some works which have no connection with the island other than being in local ownership. A popular theme is paintings of Jersey-owned and built ships depicted arriving at ports throughout the world.

Locations

In addition to the 738 paintings in 28 locations, Your Paintings also features 446 works by the prolific artist Sir Francis Foot, who moved to Jersey in 1848 at the age of 41, lived in the island for 30 years and left his gallery and a collection of over 1,200 of his paintings to the public of the island after his death.
